‘Raja Chelliah, an outstanding economist’

Our Bureau

Chennai, April 9 Dr C Rangarajan, Rajya Sabha Member and Chairman, Madras School of Economics, today said that in the passing away of Dr Raja Chelliah, India has lost an outstanding fiscal economist.

“The fundamental changes brought about in India’s tax structure in the last two decades owe much to him. Through his analytical writings and reports of various committees, he laid the intellectual base for bringing about the fundamental reforms in both direct and indirect tax structure. His contributions were not confined only to the reform of the tax structure. He wrote extensively on fiscal federalism, burden of public debt and expenditure reforms,” he said in his condolence message.

Besides being an outstanding economist, he was a great institution builder. “The National Institute of Public Finance and Policy and the Madras School of Economics are his creations. These two institutions speak for his vision and courage. I would like to convey to Mrs Chelliah and other members of the family my deepest condolences,” Dr Rangarajan said.
