Taj, Oberoi hope to stick to opening schedule

Shubhra Tandon

Mumbai, April 2 Taj Mahal Palace and Oberoi Hotel, Mumbai’s iconic hotels that were targets of the November 26th terror attacks, hope to be able to stick to their reopening schedule of December-January, despite the downturn.

Though the entire structure is like an atrium and could be fully functional by December-end or early-January, the hotel may open the lobby a little earlier, Mr Rattan Keswani of Trident Hotels told Business Line. When asked if the renovation project was feeling the pinch of the liquidity crunch in the market, he said, there was no pressure on the cash flow. Trident Hotel is the five-star offering from Oberoi.

On a similar line, Mr Ajoy K. Misra of Indian Hotels Company (operators of the Taj Group), said, “There is no date that has been fixed for the opening, but we are hoping for December. Some sections in the heritage wing are already functional.” In the Palace wing, Taj has opened the Crystal Room and the grand staircase, Sea Lounge, Gateway Rooms and Princess Rooms.

Both Indian hospitality majors re-opened their properties partially on December 21, within three weeks of the attack. The worst-hit southern side of Taj’s heritage wing, and Oberoi Hotel have been closed for renovation since the incident.
