Maruti sales up 22% in March

Chennai, April 2 Maruti Suzuki India Ltd, which commands more than half the passenger car market, has seen its total sales increase 22 per cent in March 2009 over the same month last year, with domestic sales growing 15 per cent and exports doubling.

For the full financial year, the company’s sales grew 4 per cent.

According to a company press release, Maruti Suzuki sold 73,855 vehicles in the domestic market in March 2009 (64,421) and exported 11,814 units (5,875). Total sales amounted to 85,669 (70,296). In 2008-09, the company sold 792,167 vehicles (764,842).

Exports during the year at 70,023 units showed a 32 per cent jump over the previous year. The company said exports were led by the newly launched A-star compact car, of which 19,000 units were exported to Europe, including the UK, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Denmark and Switzerland.

The company release said the company’s sales during the year were the highest ever annual sales.

Bajaj sales dip

Bajaj Auto Ltd said domestic motorcycle sales had increased progressively since December 2008 and it sold 92,947 units in March 2009. Total motorcycle sales (including exports) were at 132,210 units, a 14 per cent drop over March 2008 but a 12 per cent increase over the December 2008 numbers.

It sold a total of 154,093 units (two- and three-wheelers) in March 2009, a 13 per cent drop over the 176,280 units sold in the same month last year. For 2008-09, the company sold 2,194,108 vehicles (two- and three-wheelers), a 10 per cent decline over the 2,451,407 units sold in the previous year. Motorcycle sales at 1,907,810 units dropped 11 per cent over the previous year.
