Our Bureau

Bangalore, March 30 Public sector majors Bharat Electronics Ltd and Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd on Monday signed an MoU to explore a 250-MW joint manufacturing facility for solar photo voltaic cells, modules and silicon wafers.

The two companies would look for a suitable vendors or partners for technology and supply of raw materials such as poly silicon, a BEL release here said. The joint venture would cater to domestic solar product requirements and exports.

BEL and BHEL have an existing capacity of around 6 MW and 8 MW respectively, a spokesperson said.

BEL’s Chairman and Managing Director, Mr V.V.R. Sastry, said the location was to be decided. The project would tap government incentives for solar energy to make it economically viable and suitably address the high capital costs.

His BHEL counterpart, Mr K. Ravi Kumar, said the agreement would enhance product marketability, brand image and allow higher scale of operations. It was expected to play a leading role in the Government’s implementation of the National Climate Change Policy in Solar Mission.
