Safeguards duty imposed on aluminium products from China

K.R. Srivats

New Delhi, March 25

The Finance Ministry has imposed provisional safeguards duty on imports of aluminium flat-rolled products and aluminium foils from China.

This move would come as some relief for the domestic producers of aluminium products, who had approached the country’s safeguards office for imposition of safeguards duty on all imports of such products from China.

Provisional safeguard

While the provisional safeguard duty on aluminium flat rolled products has been pegged at 21 per cent, a safeguards duty of 35 per cent has been levied on all aluminium foils imports from China.

The provisional safeguard would be effective till October 8 (including this date), according to a Finance Ministry notification.

The Aluminium Association of India had filed the petition seeking imposition of safeguards duty. Based on this petition, the Director-General (safeguards) had in February recommended the imposition of provisional safeguards duty on imports of aluminium flat-rolled products and aluminium foils into India.

Dimethoate technical

Meanwhile, the Finance Ministry has also imposed provisional safeguard duty of 28 per cent on imports of Dimethoate Technical into India.

However, the duty is not applicable to imports of dimethoate technical from countries notified as developing countries under the Customs Tariff Act, other than China.

Dimethoate is a widely used organophosphate insecticide used to kill insects on contact. Its primary use is as an insecticide.

Shivalik Rasayan Ltd, which is the sole surviving manufacturer of Dimethoate Technical in India, had filed the petition seeking the safeguard duty.
