20-30% growth in US visas issued

Kolkata, March 21

There could be about 20-30 per cent growth in the number of US visas issued in India despite the global recession and slowdown in the economy, according to Mr Jospeh Boski, Vice Consul, US Consulate General. "This will happen due to the increasing trade between the two nations; also, more Indians are now visiting the US for business and leisure purposes," Mr Boski said, while speaking at an interactive session organised by the Indo- American Chamber of Commerce, here recently. Talking about the growth in visa adjudications in Kolkata, he said, business men and tourists accounted for about 57 per cent of the 29,000 US visa adjudicated in Kolkata in 2008.

"Temporary workers (who are typically given H1b or L1 visas) account for 16 per cent of the total number of visas adjudicated while students account for 8 per cent," he said. The biggest categories of tourist were the parents visiting the US to meet their children ( and also grandchildren) and this segment had been steadily growing, he pointed out. Dependent of students and workers visiting the US constituted about 12 per cent of the total number of visas adjudicated. The visa office in Kolkata gets about 150 applications every week and has witnessed 47 per cent growth in workload since 2003, he observed. - Our Bureau
