Coimbatore, March 20 The impasse over the operation of the newly established Common Effluent Treatment Plants (CETPs) in the Tirupur knitwear cluster seems to continue with the matter being referred to the Supreme Court.

The dyeing fraternity’s appeal to Madras High Court for expediting the operation of the newly established CETPs, “has been referred to the Supreme Court,” sources close to the development said. The dyers’ other appeals pertaining to levy of fine for polluting the Noyyal are also pending before the apex court.

The dyers have set up 12 CETPs at various locations and upgraded eight (to ensure zero discharge of effluents into water bodies) on an estimated outlay of Rs 801.42 crore.

“The plants are ready, but the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board is not giving its consent to operate,” a dyer alleged.

TNPCB stand

TNPCB sources clarified that the consent order to operate the new and upgraded CETPs had not been issued because certain issues were pending before the Court.

Subsidies delayed

Meanwhile, Mr S. Samiappan, President, Dyers’ Association of Tirupur, said the delay in receiving Central and State subsidies was proving to be costly for the members, especially when the global economic turmoil tended to impact knitwear exporters adversely.

“The CETPs can collectively treat 1,043.5 lakh litres of effluents (generated by the 700-odd units) a day,” he added.
