Events States - Kerala ‘Tap opportunities in aircraft, aerospace sectors’
Mr Elamaram Kareem Our Bureau Kochi, Feb. 26 The State Industries Minister, Mr Elamaram Kareem, has called upon the industries in the State, especially the small and medium enterprises, to tap the growing opportunities coming up in the aircraft and aerospace-related sectors comprising both defence and civil applications. Inaugurating a two-day workshop organised jointly by KSIDC, Aeronautical Society of India and the Society of Aerospace Technologies and Industries on industrial opportunities in aerospace, defence and public sector undertakings at the Nedumbassery airport on Thursday, he said that a proposal of Cochin International Airport Ltd for setting up of an industry park was under the active consideration of the State Government and called upon the entrepreneurs to exploit the opportunity. The Minister said that 100 hectares of land within the airport compound had been earmarked for this purpose and land allotment would be made depending on the requirements of the industry. Technical tie-upsHe also suggested to entrepreneurs to take advantage of the emerging opportunities by entering into technical tie-ups with major aerospace players, both in India and abroad. Side by side, the industry should also step up its quality of production to become competitive, he said. Stating that many important organisations connected with defence and aerospace-related sectors were participating at the workshop, Mr Kareem wanted meticulous follow-up actions of the workshop also to be carried out to derive maximum benefit out of it. WorkshopIntended to provide an interaction among the users, state-level public enterprises and the small and medium enterprises, the workshop is being attended by major central public sector undertakings such as Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd, Bharat Electronics Ltd, Ordnance Factory, Cochin Shipyard Ltd, Army, Navy, Air Force, NPOL and BrahMos. The Industries Principal Secretary, Mr T Balakrishnan, said that Kerala was not being part of the defence-related industries until recently, may be because it was far away from the country’s borders. But of late defence component industry had also started coming up in the State. Already four major defence-related industries had come up and its scope was widening because of the State’s better workmanship. The KSIDC Managing Director, Mr Manoj Joshi, welcomed the gathering.
