Insipid budget

Mr Pranab Mukherjee’s Interim Budget 2009-10 reminds one of the late eminent jurist Nani Palkhivala’s words: “Votes doubled, expectations multiplied, income stationary and result misery”.

Though a budget cannot satisfy all sections of the society, it could have had something for everybody, instead of everything for somebody. There is every reason for the salaried class and businessmen to feel despondent over the budget as their year-long wait for tax-relief has gone in vain.

Also, marking considerable outlay for development of rural areas in no guarantee that it will meet its end, if past performances there are any indication.

In short, the government has done this budget-exercise as a mere pre-election ritual, leaving most of the people in the country high and dry.
