DHL launches Asia-Pacific fashion centre in Tirupur

Our Bureau

Mumbai, Feb. 17 Cashing in on the opportunity that exists for logistics of apparel and fashion industry, DHL launched its Asia-Pacific ‘Fashion and Apparel Center for Excellence’ in India on Tuesday.

The first-of-its-kind centre across the region, as the global express and logistics company claims it to be, will be based out of Tirupur in Tamil Nadu.

According to the company, this centre will facilitate trade within Asia-Pacific, Europe and North America. It will comprise a core team of industry experts and be responsible for developing bespoke products and solutions and provide consultancy services to customers. The company has similar centres in Europe and the US.

Fastest growing

Speaking to newspersons, Mr Amadou Diallo, CEO (South Asia Pacific), DHL Global Forwarding, said, “In South Asia, finished apparel is the fastest growing segment and is expected to continue to grow rapidly.

“As manufacturing moves to lower cost countries, supply chains in the fashion industry have become extended and more complex, increasing trade and legal demands including import controls, quotas and tariffs.”

Explaining the functions of the centre, Mr Diallo said it would be a service centre that would enable DHL’s fashion and apparel customers to directly reach a channel that “critically understands the requirement of the industry in the region.” Rather than go to “traditional channels”, i.e., people who handle air freight or ocean freight.

Commenting on the choice of India for this centre, Mr Thomas Tieber, CEO, South Asia, DHL Global Forwarding (Thailand) Ltd, said, “More and more companies are having their buying agents in India who are also catering to the requirements of neighbouring countries like Sri Lanka, Pakistan, and Bangladesh, etc., so India becomes the obvious choice.”
