Rly Budget: Mixed response from TN trade

Our Correspondent

Madurai, Feb. 15 The trade and industry circles here have broadly welcomed the interim railway budget for 2009-10.

The Tamil Nadu Chamber of Commerce and Industry in a statement, however, said the expectation of the people of southern districts has been belied. Out of the eight BG double line projects announced, there has been none for Tamil Nadu. The high potential Tirunelveli-Chennai section should have been included. Similarly, lack of an announcement of a bullet train for the State is disappointing. The newly introduced two new express trains between Tirunelveli and Bilaspur and Tirunelveli and Mumbai via Tiruvananthapuram should have been extended up to Madurai, the Chamber has said.

The Madurai District Tiny and Small Scale Industries Association, while welcoming the introduction of five new trains in the State, has expressed its disappointment that the most expected Madurai-Thiruvananthapuram day-time chair car and Madurai-Bengaluru new train have not been announced. Also, there is no mention about the completion of Madurai-Dindugul broad gauge line and on electrification of Tiruchi-Madurai-Tirunelveli route, the Association has pointed out.

The Tamilnadu Foodgrains Merchants Association, while welcoming the proposals announced in the interim railway budget, has expressed its disappointment that their request to revert the tariff classification of foodgrains and pulses to Class 90 and help avert price escalation has not been conceded.
