Rly Budget a win-win for all: CII

New Delhi, Feb. 14

The Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) termed the Railway Budget 2009 as ‘forward looking’ and said it will create a win-win situation for all — the railways, the wagon manufacturers, heavy industries and the common man. In the 2009 Budget, the Railway Minister has focused on building capacity for the future by making the required investments in infrastructure and freight corridor projects. According to Mr Chandrajit Banerjee, Director-General, CII, f reight corridors, containers and improved passenger amenities that were announced in the budget will go a long way in making the railway network more modern and efficient. Mr Sushil Kumar Roongta, Chairman, Steel Authority of India, said they had expected a roll back of the increase in freight charges carried out six months ago, but maybe that was not possible due to this being an interim budget. The decision to take annual wagon production to 15,000 and new lines, however, would benefit the steel industry. The Confederation of All India Traders said the budget did not contain any emphasis on streamlining the freight loading mechanism which could fetch substantial revenue to the railways.
