Sudhanshu Ranade

A leading Chennai clock-and-watch retailer wasn’t too happy when the bus people decided to put up a canopied bus-stand bang in front of his store about two weeks ago. But in the end he decided to make the best of a bad job by sponsoring up a banner ad on the shelter saying ‘only the bus stops here, not the time’.

Trouble was the clock that was fitted into the shelter did not fit the message of the ad. From day one the darn thing worked only in fits and starts. Rarely, if ever, could you rely on it to tell you the time.

A wag suggested that the ad should be changed to read ‘only time stops here, not the bus’. But wiser sense prevailed.

The wording of the ad was left unchanged, but the real clock was replaced with a painted one, its hands pointing to the stroke of midnight.

Commuters who recall that this was the magic moment when Cinderella’s splendid coach turned into a pumpkin are hoping that, with the approach of summer, the opposite might happen at the stroke of noon. But they have had no luck so far.
