Mangalore, Feb. 11 In an effort to spread awareness about the importance of fish, the College of Fisheries, Mangalore – in association with National Fisheries Development Board, Hyderabad, and Karnataka Department of Fisheries – will conduct a Matsya Mela (fisheries festival) in Mangalore from February 13 to 15.

Addressing presspersons here on Tuesday, Dr Y. Basavaraju, Dean of College of Fisheries, said that the attractions of the mela are exhibition and sale of fish and fisheries products, value-added fish products, aquarium fish and accessories. Apart from highlighting the opportunities in fisheries sector, the mela will also focus on fish-related industries.

He said that fisheries sector has good potential for rural development, domestic nutritional security and export earnings. The sector provides employment to 14 million people, both directly and indirectly.

Fisheries and aquaculture contribute over 1 per cent of the national GDP and comprise 5.34 per cent of agriculture and allied activities, he said.

Highlighting the role of fish in nutritional and food security, Dr Basavaraju said more than 50 per cent of the people in the country eat fish. More than 90 per cent of the people in Goa, Assam, West Bengal, Orissa and Kerala consume fish. He said fish is considered as a health food by virtue of its richness in essential amino acids and minerals and because of its low fat contents. Fish is the cheapest animal protein source.

Dr M. Vijay Gupta, former Assistant Director-General, World Fish Centre, will inaugurate the mela on February 13, he added.
