Kerala Governor calls for labour reforms in IT sector

Our Bureau

Thiruvananthapuram, Jan. 26 Kerala needs to bring in innovative labour reforms in the IT sector, said the Kerala Governor, Mr R.S. Gavai, in his Republic Day speech.

Innovative labour reforms are required to tackle possible retrenchment in the IT sector on account of the global recession, he said. The global recession has to be dealt with on a war-footing and in a sensible way, he added.

Touching on the need to streamline local self-governance systems, he emphasised that this is required to resolve the concerns of the common man in a comprehensive, transparent and self-reliant manner.

The micro-banking system and micro-enterprises run by the Kudumbashree network of the State Poverty Eradication Mission contribute to both empowering women and eradicating poverty, Mr Gavai pointed out.

The plight of debt-ridden farmers has, for long, been a matter of deep concern to the State. The package prepared by the M.S. Swaminathan Commission for the State’s Idukki and Alappuzha districts is addressing this issue to a large extent, he said.

Kerala’s higher education sector needs to improve its quality and the State’s Universities need to become centres of excellence in research and development.
