The Southern Railway operated a heritage special train between Royapuram and Tambaram in Chennai on Monday. This was part of the 153rd anniversary of the country’s first railway station at Royapuram, which was built in 1856, a SR release said here. The history of railways in the South dates back to May 8, 1845, the day of the formation of the Madras Railway Company. The company started its operations with the opening of the 65-km rail line between Royapuram and Wallajah Road on May 28, 1856, the release said. —
