Our Bureau Mumbai, Jan. 22 Engineering major Larsen and Toubro, and Atomic Energy of Canada Ltd (AECL) have signed a memorandum of understanding for cooperation in Advanced CANDU Reactor ACR1000. The ACR1000 is AECL’s generation III-plus reactor design, which uses the proven concept of pressurised heavy water reactor (PHWR). L&T and AECL plan to develop a competitive cost model for the ACR1000. On completion of the indicative cost/scope model, AECL and L&T will hold discussions to develop nuclear power plants in India on EPC basis and also utilise their collective expertise in global markets. L&T has a lead role in equipment manufacture, construction and project management for pressurised heavy water reactors in the domestic programme, while AECL has pioneered the PHWR technology across four continents. The PHWR design is considered one of the most competitive nuclear technologies in terms of capital cost, safety and efficiency. The design allows refuelling online, eliminating periodical outage required by others. Both the parties are optimistic about the demand and L&T intends to a play a major role in the rapidly developing nuclear power sector by building strong partnerships with leading companies in the field.
