Climate & Weather Agri-Biz & Commodities - Climate & Weather Fog returns as IMD tracks fresh westerly system
Vinson Kurian Thiruvananthapuram, Jan. 19 India Meteorological Department (IMD) too has joined the watch for a fresh and moderately strong western disturbance expected to arrive by the weekend. An existing westerly system over Jammu and Kashmir dumped rain at most places in the State and many places in Punjab during the 24 hours ending Monday morning FOG RETURNSFog and shallow fog conditions returned to haunt parts of Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, north Rajasthan, east Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. These conditions are likely to continue into the morning hours for two more days as cold Arctic air, welling up at the rear of the western disturbance, mixes with the lingering moisture. The sinking motion of air associated with the seasonal anti-cyclone creates ‘stable’ conditions (as against the ‘instability’ generated by the rising motion in a low-pressure system) and traps the moisture to within the ground level. TO CLIMB DOWNCurrent meteorological analysis suggested that they might fall by 3 to 4 deg Celsius over northwest and central India during the next two days as the western disturbance moves away. The Regional Met Centre, Chennai, said isolated light rain may break out over this region during the next two days as well. A trough of low-pressure has been traced to over the Andaman Sea. This is expected to fuel a building, weak easterly wave that might forfeit some moisture to incursion of dry and cold northeasterlies from northwest India. In view of the building cold, a ‘ground frost’ alert has been issued for a few places in the upper reaches of the Nilgiris district and the Kodai Highs in Dindugal district during the next two nights.
