Drive to make Sikkim smoke-free by year-end

Sarikah Atreya

Gangtok, Jan. 18

A movement has begun in the State to spread awareness among the people here about the harmful effects of smoking. The objective is to make Sikkim a ‘smoke free’ State by the end of this year.

The concerned agencies have also expressed their determination to implement the laws prohibiting cigarette smoking in public places from February, and launch a crackdown on the offenders.

Meanwhile, the State government has taken serious note of a recent survey report of State Tobacco Control Cell. The Cell had surveyed 30 government schools in East district where it found that 20 per cent of students smoke cigarettes. Around 46 per cent of students in Sikkim chew tobacco, the report states.

Another reason for the alarm bells is over a report which says that 74 per cent of the deaths in Sikkim is from non-communicable diseases. Tobacco consumption has been named as the major reason for these diseases.

Awareness drive

Considering the serious threat posed by smoking and chewing tobacco, the Union government has already put a legal ban on smoking in public places. In Sikkim, public awareness campaigns are being conducted in several urban areas of the State to sensitise the people before implementing the ban.

A meeting towards this objective was conducted recently at the chamber of District Collector (East) office here. It was chaired by District Collector (East), Mr Vishal Chauhan, and attended by representatives from various departments and the media.
