Maersk augments services to US East Coast

Maersk Line has announced enhancements of its weekly services between the Middle East/Indian sub-continent to the US East Coast, the objective being “to improve the reliability of services as well as offer new opportunities”, according to company sources.

The new MECL 1 eastbound service, to be introduced from Norfolk on January 31, will have the following port rotation: Newark-Charleston-Norfolk -Port Said-Salalah-Jebel Ali – Port Qasim- Nhava Sheva (Jawaharlal Nehru port). The transit time between Newark and Nhava Sheva is estimated at 29 days.

The port rotation in the same MECL 1, but westbound service, launched from January 5 from Jebel Ali, will be: Jebel Ali – Port Qasim – Nhava Sheva – Salalah – Newark – Charleston - Norfolk. The transit time between Nhava Sheva and Newark is at 19 days and between Nhava Sheva and Norfolk 23 days.

The MECL 2 eastbound service, being launched from Houston on Tuesday (January 13), will have the port rotation of Houston – Norfolk – Algeciras – Gioia Tauro – Djibouti – Jebel Ali – Chennai – Colombo. The transit time between Houston and Chennai will be about 34 days. The MECL 2 westbound service is to be launched from January 25 with port rotation of Chennai – Colombo – Salalah – Aqaba – Port Said – Algeciras – Newark – Savannah – Houston and the transit time between Chennai and Houston is estimated at 33 days.

The feature of the MECL 1 services (both east and west bound) is improved transit time between the US East Coast ports and the Indian sub-continent and of the MECL 2 services “market exclusive direct calls in Chennai”, the sources add.
