Maxcor Lifescience in pact with Micell

Our Bureau

Bangalore, Jan. 12 The newly formed subsidiary of Opto Circuits (I) Ltd’s (OCI), Maxcor Lifescience Inc has entered into a strategic cooperation agreement with the Micell Technologies, in developing and marketing Rapamycin (sirolimus)-based drug eluting stents and drug eluting balloons, which complement OCI’s current range of paclitaxel-based drug device combination products used for cardiovascular treatment.

OCI will be getting the technology for coating the drug (Rapamycin) from the US-based Micell for its stents. OCI had acquired Maxcor, a leading German stent manufacturing company, more than a year ago.

Micell Technologies is a privately-held, early-stage biomedical company dedicated to applying its unique surface and polymer modification technologies for improved patient benefits for medical device and drug delivery applications.

Maxcor Lifescience hopes that its offerings of the two products (stents and balloons) with both compounds (Repamycin and its paclitael based drug device) will enable OCI to maximise its market by addressing additional clinical scenarios. Mr Vinod Ramani, Chairman and Managing Director, OCI, said, “The science of medicating an interventional device is highly complex and requires exceptional clinical expertise and know-how. We are proud to begin working with Micell which has a strong intellectual property portfolio in this arena and which we hope will help give momentum to our jointly developed new products in new and regulated markets.”
