Bio-tech & Genetics States - Andhra Pradesh ‘Genetically modified foods pose health hazards’ Our Bureau Hyderabad, Jan. 12 The assumption promoted by biotechnology companies such as Monsanto and others that genetically modified seeds would give increased yields is not true, Mr Jeffrey M. Smith, Executive Director, Institute for Responsible Technology, a USA-based NGO said. He added that on the other hand consumption of genetically modified food would be hazardous to the health. Mr Smith was in the city to announce the launch of his book, ‘Genetic Roulette: The documented health risks of genetically engineered foods’, under the aegis of the Deccan Development Society. He said that the book documented scientific studies and evidence from across the globe about the disastrous impact of GM foods on human health and environment. “As India is on the threshold of allowing more GM foods, the book would help civil society and policy makers debate the consequences of cultivating GM crops,” he added. According to Mr Smith, though the US Food and Drug Administration had claimed GM foods were safe to eat, the FDA scientists had warned that genetically modified organisms could create unpredictable, hard-to-detect side effects, including allergies, toxins, new diseases and nutritional problems. “They urged long-term safety studies but their concerns were ignored,” he said.
