Social Security Internal audit detects irregular payments, overpayments by EPFO Our Bureau New Delhi, Dec. 27 The Employees Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) has made irregular payments and overpayments to the tune of Rs 3.68 crore in the last three years. The irregularities have been detected by the internal audit department of the provident fund body. While complaints of irregularities in the disbursement of provident fund to the subscribers in time, and flawed calculations resulting in lower realisations for the PF subscribers have been common, cases of overpayments are rare, officials in the Ministry of Labour said. Irregular payments made by EPFO for the three years 2005-06, 2006-07and 2007-08 stood at Rs 150 lakh, Rs 9.43 lakh and Rs 1.52 lakh, respectively — taking the total to Rs 1.61 crore. Simultaneously, overpayments for these years stood at Rs 11.38 lakh, Rs 52.74 lakh and Rs 121.12 lakh, respectively — taking the total to Rs 2.08 lakh. A Review Committee on overpayments is now examining these cases and will decide on the next course of action for recovery of these funds. “Normally there are provisions of taking actions by launching complaint with the police or the Central Bureau of Investigation. But the committee will have to decide on a case to case basis since many of the beneficiaries might have died during these three years, making recovery impossible,” officials said.
