Hyderabad, Dec. 26

Emirates SkyCargo, the freight division of Emirates Airline, has garnered over 50 per cent of the air exports of hazardous goods out of Hyderabad.

The lion’s share of this comes from the drug and pharma and chemicals industry. Hyderabad, is the bulk drug capital of the country and has a significant number of exporters.

Hazardous goods, active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) having hazardous properties, chemicals, inflammable liquids used for industrial purposes, are some of the products carried by the Emirates SkyCargo.

However, the total volume or value of the hazardous goods exported is not available.

The Freight division of Emirates Airline’s transports these items in accordance with the standards laid out under the IATA/ICAO (International Air Transport Association/International Civil Aviation Organisation) dangerous goods regulations, to destinations in Europe, the US, Africa etc.

Capacity expansion

By adding one more flight on the Hyderabad-Dubai route recently (taking the total to 21 flights a week from Hyderabad), the Airline has enhanced its trade and cargo movement capacity, said Mr Laurence Jacobi, Cargo Manager, Andhra Pradesh.

Currently, the Emirates SkyCargo offers more than 300 tonnes of air cargo capacity a week for one direction on this route.

Given the potential to export products, especially in the hitech industry from Hyderabad, “We have focused on drugs, vaccines, solar panels, optical lenses, computer products and laboratory and research equipment”, he told Business Line.

Emirates SkyCargo has also tied up with Envirotainer, a Scandinavian company for providing advanced cold chain facilities, for ensuring that the pharma products exported meet standards of the regulated markets in the US, Europe, Japan etc., he added.

Cold chain facilities

Another innovative offer for the pharma sector is the ‘White Cover’, for temperature sensitive shipment transportation.

Emirates SkyCargo has in collaboration with a research institution specialised in cold chain management and technologies has developed this product. It is a re-usable protective cover, light weight and low cost, and ensures the maintenance of required temperatures.
