Villagers seek more compensation for land acquired by Kakinada SEZ

Our Bureau

Kakinada, Dec 23 Some of the villages in the two mandals of Uppada Kothapalli and Thondangi were in the grip of tension on Tuesday morning and afternoon, as the authorities of the Kakinada Special Economic Zone (KSEZ) sought to take possession of the lands acquired by them and erect a fence.

The attempt was resisted by the villagers in spite of heavy police deployment. More than a thousand cops were on duty, it is learnt.

The agitating farmers said the compensation paid to them was paltry and the lands were taken from them on the pretext that a refinery would be set up by ONGC. Subsequently, ONGC withdrew and the contract was awarded to the GMR group.

The KSEZ and the Government were indulging in real estate business, they complained.

They were robbed of their lands for a pittance, they complained, and now only the private industry was reaping the benefits. They sought revision of compensation and a more comprehensive relief and rehabilitation package.
