Piracy Chinese Navy in anti-piracy force
For the first time, the Chinese Navy is to join the international maritime team fighting pirates in Somali waters. China, it is learnt, has decided to send two destroyers and a supply ship to the troubled Gulf of Aden. This is also for the first time that China’s coastal naval force of the People’s Liberation Army will be sending warships beyond the Pacific and will truly become a blue-water navy to engage itself in a battle zone. This follows a foiled hijackin g of a Chinese cargo ship, the Zhenhua 4, in Somali waters. The brave crew on board the ship resisted the attack by using water cannons and home-made bombs till a Malaysian helicopter, part of the international protection force, arrived on the scene on receipt of a cry for help. According to one report, an estimated 20 per cent of 1,265 Chinese ships that passed through the Gulf of Aden in first eleven months faced attacks from pirates who, it is reported, are still holding a Chinese fishing trawler and its crew.
