‘Expand cashew cultivation in N-E States’

Our Bureau

Mangalore, Nov. 24 There is a need to expand cultivation of cashew in north-eastern and east coast States such as Orissa, according to Mr Oscar Fernandes, Union Minister of State for Labour and Employment.

Launching ‘Vision 2020’ project of the Cashew Export Promotion Council of India (CEPCI) in Mangalore, he said the country imported raw cashew nuts to meet the needs of processing units in the country. However, there is good scope for growing cashew in north-eastern States and in Orissa. Soil and weather is conducive for the cultivation of crop in these States. Cashew scientists and the industry should take steps to propagate cashew crop in these States, he said.

Mr Fernandes termed ‘Vision 2020’ project as a roadmap for progress.

Mr Walter D’Souza, former Chairman of CEPCI, said that Vision 2020 is all about empowering growers and women. As CEPCI visualises cashew export of 2.75 lakh tonnes by 2020, there is a need to increase production of raw cashew nuts to 1.9 million tonnes.

He said cashew crop cultivation can be expanded in waste lands either under public-private partnership or through perpetual lease. He sought the cooperation of Central and State governments in this matter.

Major cashew growers and exporters – India, Vietnam and Brazil – have signed two memoranda of understanding on the global cashew alliance, , he said.

Mr G. Giridhar Prabhu, Convenor of Vision 2020, said that Vision 2020 would focus on 3 ‘P’s — production, productivity and profitability.
