Events Meet explores green certification for ornamental fish Our Bureau Kochi, Oct. 15 The Marine Products Export Development Authority (MPEDA) has organised a five-day workshop in Kochi. The workshop was organised in association with project PIABA undertaken by the Center of Ornamental Fish Studies and Conservation, Brazil and UNCTAD for developing guidelines on production and trade of green certified ornamental fishes. Inaugural sessionAt the inaugural session, Mr G. Mohan Kumar, Chairman of MPEDA, highlighted the efforts undertaken on the issue of Green Certification and Geographic Indication of ornamental fish. The workshop dealt in detail with links between green certification or eco-labeling and fair value of the product along the chain of bio-commerce, in close association with the environment and other stakeholders. It also explored issues related to geographical indication of endemic fish species and the process and procedures involved. Mr Kuruvilla Thomas, Director, MPEDA, presided over the function on endemic fish species and the processes and procedures involved. Prof. Labbish Chao, Project PIABA, giving details of the successful implementation of ‘Buy a fish save a Tree’ programme in Amazon and Brazil and suggested the slogan ‘Buy a fish and save a Family’ in the Indian context.
