Supermarket banking

Apropos the article “Investment banks should be more like supermarkets” (Business Line, September 19), the problems engulfing the financial markets can, in fact, be traced to the super-market like nature of transactions undertaken by the investment banks.

In their greed to control the financial market, they expanded their investment banking to trading, investment management, underwriting, market research for commercial purposes and consultancy and counselling.

Because of their common proprietary interests, the drawing of lines between their professional decisions and the ownership concerns got blunted, leading to the present turmoil.
