Save farmers

Your editorial “Thinly insured” (Business Line, September 12) has hit the nail on the head. Agriculture, which is the backbone of India’s economy, is vulnerable to floods, in particular. Hence, it is imperative that the economic loss of farmers (houses and crops) must be made good promptly.

The government insurance companies must have adequate capital to meet such eventualities. After all, achieving economic growth of nine per cent is meaningless if majority of the farmers in the country are ill-fed and lack adequate shelter.
