Star set to launch regional channels

Meera Mohanty

New Delhi, Aug. 8 The first of Star’s regional channels to be launched post the recent visit of News Corp chief, Mr Rupert Murdoch, will be a Bengali general channel entertainment channel possibly named Star Jolsa. According to industry sources, the channel, a Star venture, could be launched before a month’s time.

A Marathi channel is reportedly also in the pipeline. During his recent visit, Mr Rupert Murdoch announced $100-million investment in six new regional television channels that are to be launched within the next year.

In the regional space, the network has a Tamil channel Star Vijay and two news channels. There is Star Majha, the Marathi news channel, and then the ABP joint venture that runs STAR Ananda.

The network could also be considering a Gujarati channel. There have been media reports, since Mr Murdoch’s visit, about a possible tie up with Asianet Entertainment.

Star also had a joint venture with Balaji Telefilms, the makers of some of the channel’s most popular soaps, in which it owns 25.9 per cent stake with plans to launch regional channels for the southern markets, starting with a Telugu channel. The company, however, would not comment on the status of those plans.
