Coir exports register 7.8% growth in Q1

Exports of coir and coir products have registered an increase of 7.83 per cent in terms of quantity and 1.99 per cent in terms of value during the period between April and June this year.

As per the figures available with the Coir Board, exports registered an increase of 3,272 tonnes touching 45,038 tonnes valued at Rs 129.64 crore. The figures during the corresponding last year was 41,766 tonnes valued at Rs 127.1 crore.

The export of semi finished items of coir such as coir yarn recorded a decrease of 17 per cent in quantity and 21 per cent in terms of value during the period.

Mr A.C. Jose, Chairman, Coir Board, said that coir export in the first quarter of 2008-09 successfully continued to build a strong momentum.

“The performance gives us confidence that we are on the right track. Even though the rupee appreciation prevails, we could managed to sustain an attractive growth rate,” he said.

Coir products

Export of coir pith has increased from 18,575 tonnes to 24,435 tonnes in quantity (32 per cent) and in terms of value, it increased from Rs 14.62 crore to Rs 17.65 crore (21 per cent). Rubberised coir increased from 184 tonnes to 307 tonnes in quantity and in terms of value, it increased from Rs 1.47 crore to Rs 2.41 crore.

Export of coir mat increased from 15,137 to 15,956 tonnes in quantity and in terms of value, it increased from Rs 89.69 crore to Rs 95.64 crore. However, export of coir matting decreased from 934 tonnes to 592 tonnes in terms of quantity and there was a decrease from Rs 5.78 crore to Rs 4.05 crore in terms of value.

The export of coir rugs and carpets has also decreased from 73 tonnes to 6 tonnes in terms of quantity. In terms of value, there was a decrease from Rs 6.57 crore to Rs 5.18 crore.
