Kerala Tourism wins PATA awards

Thiruvananthapuram, July 28

Kerala Tourism has bagged two gold awards, one in culture and the other in consumer travel brochure categories, of Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA) for 2008.

The culture initiative titled ‘Utsavam’ won the award for being instrumental in reviving the cultural heritage of Kerala as well as for the enrichment of the local community. Part of the grand plan to revive the fast-vanishing art forms, Utsavam featured over 100 art forms, 2,000 artistes and 1,000 performances at 36 venues across all the 14 districts of the State.

Envisaged as an annual event, the objective of the initiative is not just marketing the destination among tourists, but to revitalise the unsung artistes who have dedicated themselves to perfecting their vocation, according to a statement from the Department of Tourism.

The award winning theme brochure, designed and conceptualised by Stark Communications, presents the multi-layered Kerala experience through photographs, extracts from real-life ‘transformational’ experiences of travellers, anecdotes of local people and organisations, essential information and maps.

The Minister for Tourism, Mr Kodiyeri Balakrishnan, attributed the awards to Kerala Tourism’s sustainable tourism policy and strong marketing strategies.

The PATA awards would inspire the Tourism Department to perform better and also set a new benchmark for all its future plans and endeavours, Mr M. Sivasankar, Director, Kerala Tourism, said.
