Terrorism Government - Politics States - Gujarat Multiple blasts go off at busy Ahmedabad areas Our Bureau Ahmedabad, July 26 A day after bomb blasts rocked Bangalore, at least 18 people were reported dead and more than 100 injured, many of them critically, when tiffin-bombs exploded at nearly 20 places across Ahmedabad on Saturday evening, the police said.
Initial reports said the bombs had been packed in tiffin boxes tied to old bicycles parked at different places. The blasts began after 6.41 p.m. and in a space of just 15 minutes, the entire city was a scene of chaos. Just five minutes before the blasts, an e-mail had reportedly been received at India TV news channel office in which a terrorist group identifying itself as ‘Indian Mujahideen’ had warned of the blasts.
The areas affected included Civil Hospital, Hatkeshwar, Narol and others, mostly those falling in the Chief Minister, Mr Narendra Modi’s Assembly constituency of Maninagar. Mr Modi called an emergency meeting of Ministers and officials to review the situation.
The authorities sealed the railway station and a high-level alert was sounded all over Gujarat.
Five years ago, similar tiffin box blasts had rocked Ahmedabad but casualties were few.
