Our Bureau Pune, July 26 An overwhelming 2,340 workers of a total of 2,710 workers at Bajaj Auto Ltd, Akurdi have opted for the voluntary retirement scheme that was offered to them last week, and was open till the evening of July 25. This brings to an end nearly 11 months of strife amongst the workers that began since production of two-wheelers here was shut down early last September. Though the workers received their monthly wages, the majority of them had no daily work. Mr C.P. Tripathi, Vice-President, Corporate, chief architect of the VRS, said that company had accepted the applications of 2,340 workers and was in the process of scrutinising several more that had been received. “We have the right to refuse an application if the person is vital to us,” he said. The dues of those whose applications have been accepted will be cleared on July 31, he added. According to the VRS, each worker would get a lump-sum of Rs 5.75 lakh. “The union requested that the company’s welfare scheme be extended to them, and we agreed,” Mr Tripathi said. According to a member of the workers’ union, with this, each worker will get a monthly payment of Rs 10,000 till the date of retirement. The company had also stipulated that a minimum 1,100 workers would have to opt for the VRS if the remaining were to get benefits of the new wage agreement that was announced simultaneously. The number of applications received till the close of the deadline far exceeded this number.
