Better prospects for print, outdoor at Cannes this year

Mumbai, June 11 Print and outdoor ads created by Indian agencies stand a better chance of winning the Lions this year at Cannes. According to Mr Prasoon Joshi, Executive Chairman of McCann Worldgroup India and the Head, Cannes Lions 2008, Outdoor Jury, “This year there are more chances of Indian agencies winning in the outdoor and print categories.”

Mr Joshi who is flying to Cannes on Wednesday night is, however, ready for more surprises once he reaches there. “Cannes is a surprising place as it is the only place where work is entered for the current year. I have not had the time to see all the work from the agencies this year and there could be some surprises is all that I can say at this point,” he says.

But Indian ads which have been on a winning spree at international award shows such as Clio, One Show and D&AD might stand a better chance this year. As Ms Priti Nair, National Creative Director, Grey Worldwide, and also a jury member at Cannes observes, “The ads which have already won at international awards like Clio have better prospects. Ads of Luxor and Hutch, especially in categories like outdoor and print, might stand a better chance.”

At the same time, ads with local nuances may not end up winning at Cannes. Observes Mr Sagar Mahabaleshwar, National Creative Director, Rediffusion DY&R, “Ads with very local nuances may not end up at Cannes. There are agencies creating ads specifically for Cannes in fact”.

Rediff has already won international awards for some campaigns of Amway car wash and Airtel. “At Rediff, we have 20-odd entries this year as entries is an expensive affair at Cannes,” says Mr Mahabaleshwar.

However, other ad industry veterans feel this year is not going to as good as the previous years at Cannes. Mr Nakul Chopra, CEO, Publicis South Asia, says, “I am not sure about this year as we had a better show for ourselves in the past years. Some of the print work at the Abby’s stand a chance, but I am not sure about television.”

The 55th International Advertising Festival will be held June 15-21 in Cannes, France.
