Sikkim cuts sales tax on petrol, diesel

Sarikah Atreya

Gangtok, June 9 The Sikkim Government has reduced the sales tax on petrol and diesel, providing much-needed respite to users following the recent fuel price hike announced by the Union Government.

According to a notification issued by the State Department of Food and Civil Supplies and Consumers here on June 7, the prices of petrol and diesel have been reduced by Rs 2 and Rs 1.40 with immediate effect after reduction of sales tax on these two products.

According to the Government notification, petrol will now cost Rs 50.65/litre against Rs 52.55, while the cost of diesel is now Rs 35.80.

However, housewives will get no respite as the price of LPG cylinders has not been reduced from Rs 357.

old biz community seeks tax exemption

The ‘old business community’ of Sikkim has asked the State to press the Centre to exempt them from income tax.

This request was contained in a memorandum sent by the Association of Old Businessmen of Sikkim to the Chief Minister, Mr Pawan Chamling, last week.

While congratulating the Chief Minister for having “effectively met the aspirations of the Sikkimese people by fulfilling a long pending demand of exemption from Central Income Tax to Sikkim subject holders” the Association has said that “old businessmen” should also be included in the tax exemption, taking into consideration the contributions made by them over the years.

A delegation of old businessmen had earlier called on the Chief Minister on April 10 and drawn his attention to their plea.

The association has also asked the Chief Minister to bring a resolution to this effect in the current session of the Sikkim Legislative Assembly.
