No need to import wheat: Pawar

Our Bureau

New Delhi, April 23 The Union Food and Agriculture Minister, Mr Sharad Pawar, on Wednesday ruled out the need to import wheat this year. Of the 15 million tonnes (mt) wheat targeted to be procured for buffer stocks, 60 per cent has already been procured.

“I am confident of procuring 16-17 mt wheat this year... As of now I don’t see a need for import of wheat,” Mr Pawar said, inaugurating the State Agriculture Ministers’ conference here.

In the last ten days, the average procurement of wheat in Punjab and Haryana was about 99 per cent of the market arrival, Mr Pawar said, adding that the Food Corporation of India had so far procured 8.6 mt wheat.

On National Food Security Mission, he said: “Initial reports from a few States indicate an increase of wheat seed distribution from about 43 per cent in Rajasthan to about ten times in Bihar. ”
