Our Bureau

Bangalore, April 9 Tandberg, a provider of videoconferencing solutions, has set up a research and development technology centre in Bangalore primarily to tap the local talent.

Speaking at a press conference, Mr Odd Johnny Winge, Executive Vice-President, Products, said the company would be developing complete products at the Bangalore centre. He said access to talent and not cost arbitrage has been the driver for coming to India.

The company declined to say how much it invested in India, but said the amount of investment is directly dependant on the kind of talent they would be able to hire.

At present, the company has signed up 11 employees for the Bangalore R&D centre. Mr Snorre Kjesbu, Vice-President, Technology and Innovation, said Tandberg is looking to hire people skilled in embedded systems, video coding and audio coding among others.

Tandberg said the facility, named Tandberg Technology India Pvt Ltd, is the company’s fourth R&D facility worldwide, with others being in Oslo, London and New Zealand.

Mr Pradeep Bardia would be the Director of the Bangalore centre and Mr Lars Erik Mobaek, Director, Technology would lead the R&D activities, the company said.

Tandberg, which has its headquarters in New York and Norway, said the company had a market share of 40 per cent in 2007. Mr Winge said Tandberg’s growth rate in 2007 was 50 per cent year-on-year.

The company said India is growing significantly as a market as well. In India, Tandberg at present has a sales and service team of 20 people, it said.
