L&T’s electrical unit files for 101 patents

Our Bureau

Mumbai, April 6 Larsen & Toubro’s Electrical & Electronics division has filed 101 patent applications for the year 2007-08. Switchgear products account for 65, medical products 20, energy meters 10 and petroleum dispensing pumps 6. The division has also applied for 32 design registrations and 11 trademarks during the year.

An L&T release said the total number of patent applications filed by EBG, so far, was 345. Of this, those filed for switchgear products were 234 and 58 for medical products . The EBG division has so far filed 346 applications for design registration and 105 for trademark. Mr R.N. Mukhija, President (Electrical & Electronics), said, “EBG has been at the forefront of developing technology for the next generation products and solutions. The intellectual wealth created by our engineers is being ably protected through patents and design registrations by the Intellectual Property Management (IPM) cell. This is, in turn, creating tremendous value that can be unlocked through self-use and preventing competitors’ from infringing on our technology.

“We also have strategic alliances with several leading research organisations, test laboratories and academic institutions to enable us to offer technologically superior products and services, and thereby, setting new benchmarks in the industry.”

Overseas filing

For some products with export potential, the EBG has been filing patents overseas as well. For one of its exported switchgear products, the U-POWER ACB, EBG has filed for seven overseas patents, which include a US patent grant ‘Design system of secondary isolating contacts in circuit breakers’ and a Chinese patent grant ‘A novel design of rail driving mechanism for draw-out circuit breaker’. Three have also been filed in China for protection relays. For its latest export version of medical products, the EBG has filed for three patents in the US. The IPM cell scans emerging technology trends and patent search for potential infringements before a patent is filed and gives its report to technologists and design engineers. This proactive approach ensures that none of EBG’s products infringe on any competitors’ products unknowingly. Once a patent is filed by EBG, the cell also constantly searches for similar patents being filed by competitors to ensure that nobody infringes or copies its products or features.
