Suzlon Wind gets $240-m order

Our Bureau

Mumbai, April 4

Suzlon Wind Energy Corporation, a step-down subsidiary of Suzlon Energy Ltd, has got a repeat order to supply 200 MW of wind turbine capacity from Horizon Wind Energy, Texas of the US.

The order is in the range of $200 million-240 million. The original contract included an order of 400 MW of turbine capacity to be delivered in 2008 and 2009.

Agreement

The turbine agreement includes the supply of 95 units of the S88-2.1 MW in 2008 and 190 units in 2009. Suzlon is also contracted for operation and maintenance of the wind turbines for two years and has an option to offer the same services for five years.

Mr Andre Horbach, CEO, Suzlon Group, “This order reinforces the trend for renewable energy and wind in the US. Despite economic slowdown, new wind installations have doubled in 2007 from 2006. With growth drivers such as Renewable Portfolio Standards, and the US actively pursuing domestic resources of energy security - we see a strong, promising market going forward,” he said.

Mr Tulsi Tanti, Chairman and Managing Director, said that it is an important order demonstrating Suzlon’s position in the US market. With oil price setting new records above $100 a barrel, utilities and industries are looking at ways to hedge power costs. Global warming could impact world economy, therefore, a number of nations are looking at wind energy in a big way, he said.
