Satyam outsources some HR jobs
Archana Venkat
Chennai, March 9
Satyam Computer Services has started outsourcing
some portion of its human resources management
activity to tier-II and tier-III BPO centres, better known
as `GramIT'. This includes services such filing,
documentation and other paper-based administrative
work deemed `repetitve' by the company. GramIT was set
up by the Byrraju Foundation, a non-profit organisation
promoted by Satyam Computers. According to Mr S.V.
Krishnan, the company's Senior Vice-President and
Head- Human Resources, this is part of the organisation's
plan to `virtualise' HR functions so that HR professionals
focus on their core job - managing people. Earlier this
year, the company embarked on automating some portion
of its existing HR functions. "We plan to virtualise any
work that is repetitive. We believe about 80 per cent of all
existing functions can be virtualised," Mr Krishnan told
Business Line on the sidelines of the MMA Women
Managers' Convention 2008 titled `Women Unlimited -
Challenges in a global India'. GramIT centres typically
have about 50 seats and employ youth from the same or
nearby villages thus creating employment/
entrepreneurship opportunities. When asked what per
cent of work was currently being outsourced to GramIT,
he said it was too small a figure to disclose. "We have a
long way to go. But our main aim is not to derive
monetary benefits of this outsourcing but to give a source
of livelihood to youngsters in rural India," he said.
