Singapore expects 1 m Indian tourists in ’09

Eyes growing affluent middle class from the country

Our Bureau

Bangalore, Feb. 27 The Singapore Tourism Board (STB) acknowledged the major role being played by Indians in the Island Nation’s tourism traffic, which crossed the 10-million visitors’ mark. It was also confident that the number of Indian visitors alone would hit the million mark next year at the current growth rate of 14 per cent.

Toppers

The top 10 cities including Mumbai, Chennai, Delhi and Hyderabad contributed to 14 per cent growth year-on-year to log 7.49 lakh last year, a growth averaging more than 25 per cent.

Cities like Tiruchy, Coimbatore and Madurai accounted for a growth of 32 per cent, 29 per cent and 25 per cent respectively. Though these cities had no direct air link to Singapore, the increasing number of visitors from these cities to Singapore has prompted the STB to intensify its marketing to Indian tourists.

India, which ranks fourth after Indonesia, China and Australia, also garners greater prominence in terms of longest average stay per visitor at 5.5 days and also in spending. Though STB did not have the latest figure, an Indian visitor accounted for an average of S$1,200 two years ago.

Leisure

Of the total number of visitors from India, leisure travellers accounted 58 per cent while business and MICE (Meetings, Incentives Conferences and Exhibitions) accounted for 30 per cent, said Ms Siew-Kheng Kang, Regional Director, South Asia, Middle East and Africa.

Raise pitch

To further increase the visibility of Singapore to Indians, STB has stepped up its campaign to attract the fast growing affluent middle class to Singapore’s new offerings – Singapore Flyer – the world’s largest observation wheel to be launched in March, which will offer a breathtaking view of the country.
