Bullish on India, global IT major Sun Microsystems is betting big on growth in telecom, financial services and government segments, even while it expects to significantly ramp up headcount in the Asia-Pacific region, particularly in markets such as India, China, and Korea.

“Asia-Pacific is the fastest growing region for Sun Microsystems.

“We see a huge growth in the telecom business, given tremendous infrastructure build-up by telecom companies in China, India, Korea and Japan.

In addition, financial services and insurance and the Government segments are growing fast,” Mr Denis Heraud, President, Asia Pacific, Sun Microsystems Inc, said.

The retail sector is showing a strong demand in India, he said.

He added that the company also saw a strong growth in utilities space in markets such as China.

Faster growth

“Sun Asia Pacific grew two times faster than the APAC market in FY07,” he pointed out.

During FY07, Sun Asia Pacific revenue grew 11 per cent year-on-year with revenue contribution pegged at $2.37 billion.

Commenting on the ‘Sun addressable market’ growth within the Asia-Pacific region, Mr Heraud said that the FSI space was growing at 7 per cent, telecom (6.8 per cent), manufacturing (6 per cent), government (7.1 per cent) among others.

The Sun addressable market refers to markets for the company’s products, and therefore excludes IT products such as laptops, printers, switches, among others.

Attracting talent

“We will be significantly increasing Sun’s resources in APAC, by hiring several 100 professionals across various countries, and we expect our partner community to hire two times more.

“In fact, we are not limited by opportunities in the market but the ability to find the resources. The additional hiring will happen by June this year.”

Areas of interest

“We are keen to attract talent in areas such as High Performance Computing (HPC), volume business, software and virtualisation,” he said.

Sun Microsystems develops the technologies that power the global marketplace.

Guided by the objective ‘The Network is the Computer’, the company drives network participation through shared innovation, community development and open source leadership.
