Engineering goods exports touched $27.11 billion in 2006-07

Kolkata, Feb. 25

The first reverse buyer-seller meet (BSM) — involving buyers from Asean Australia, New Zealand and the US organised by the Engineering Export Promotion Council (EEPC) — took off here on Monday.

This is the first of the series organised by the council in Kolkata, Chennai, Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore, Pune, Coimbatore and Ludhiana, scheduled for completion on March 6, 2008.

According to Mr R.P. Sehgal, some 10 firms from the US and 16 from Asean countries will participate. He said some 35 foreign buyers of engineering items from USA, Canada, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam, Myanmar and New Zealand will be interacting with some 45 Indian member-firms of EEPC. He felt such BSMs would particularly benefit small and medium enterprises who find it difficult to participate in overseas promotional events on their own.

He said the BSMs have been organised in such a manner to ensure that “our buyers from different regions of the world are allocated to different cities where they will meet the respective representatives of the council interested in catering to the needs of those regions.”

Export platform

Mr Sehgal said the BSM was a unique opportunity and a platform for exporters of engineering products and services to develop business contacts with importers, buyers, dealers, distributors and wholesalers from USA, Europe, Africa, Latin America, the Asean region, Australia, New Zealand and CIS countries.

Citing engineering exports as the single largest commodity in India’s merchandise exports, comprising a fifth of India’s total exports, he said engineering goods exports touched $27.11 billion during 2006-07, recording an increase of 33.28 per cent over that in the previous fiscal. Describing USA as the largest single nation export market for India’s engineering with exporst in 2006-07 touching $4.1 billion, Mr Sehgal said Asean was an equally important region, with exports of $3.13 billion during 2006-07.
