The picturesque Araku valley situated in the Eastern ghats, a tourist spot in the Visakhapatnam district, has attracted more tourists this season.
The valley has witnessed 17 per cent increase in arrivals, according to the officials of the Andhra Pradesh Tourism Development Corporation.
According to Mr Jeevan Prasad, Divisional Manager of the APTDC, there has been enhanced awareness about Araku valley as a tourist destination, improved air connectivity and the general perception of Visakhapatnam as a “happening city” has brought in more tourists.
Better facilities
The APTDC has spent Rs 5 crore on improving the facilities at the Anantagiri hill resort. More APTDC cottages are coming up and besides that as many as 30 private resorts have come up in the Anatagiri-Araku belt in the eastern ghats.
Mayuri hill resort has been developed at Araku and also a museum on fifteen tribes living in the area has been set up, Mr Prasad said. “We want to develop the 11-acre site surrounding the museum into an entertainment zone for the tourists and we want them to experience the ambience of a tribal hamlet in the area,” he said.
Borra caves in particular draws many tourists and the APTDC is making efforts to make it a “memorable experience” for the tourists. “We are setting up more view points at Tyda, Ananatagiri and other places. A swimming pool is being built at Mayuri Resort and musical fountains at several places,” he said.
Mr Prasad said, “There have been more than a lakh visitors to the Borra caves in December this season, the highest so far, and we are sure many more will follow.”
