Sand plunder
– K.K. Mustafah
A view of a river near Kanjangad in Kasaragod district, Kerala, at dawn. Local people are engaged in sand mining. Blessed with a copious annual rainfall (3,000 mm), large number of rivers, chains of backwater bodies and number of ponds and water tanks, Kerala is considered to be a land of surplus water resources. However, indiscriminate sand mining and lack of proper management of resources have contaminated both surface and ground water, paving way for acute water shortage.
