The dream-run

This has reference to Mr Yashwant Sinha’s remark that the dream-run being enjoyed by the United Progressive Alliance government since 2004 seems to be ending now (Business Line, February 23).

The sad reality is that even if there had really been a dream-run, measured in terms of economic parameters (agricultural and industrial production, domestic savings, export growth, and so on), it has done little to reduce the number of persons living below the poverty line or, for that matter, unemployment and under-employment.

People hardly notice whether the economy is on the upswing or downswing. All they need is good education facilities, employment opportunities and availability of essential goods at reasonable prices. By these standards, successive governments at the Centre (for the last six decades) have achieved but marginal success.
