Programme open to collaborations

Hyderabad, Feb. 21 The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), is set to launch a new national initiative to develop precision guided munitions (PGMs), to fly onboard missiles.

The project has been technically cleared by the Government and the necessary funds need to be allocated, said Dr S.K. Chaudhuri, scientist and Associate Director of the Research Centre Imarat (RCI), one of the key missile development labs under the DRDO.

The next few months should see the ‘green signal’ from the Government for the project. PGMs are to be mounted on a typical Prithvi missile and could target key enemy installations, he told presspersons here.

The PGM programme would also be open to collaborations both domestic and international. An array of technologies would be required to develop these missile launched PGMs and the RCI would have an important role, Dr Chaudhuri said.

The RCI is into producing precise and reliable missile technologies for the country’s weapon systems. Dr Chaudhuri, who is also Chairman of the upcoming International Conference on Avionics Systems (ICAS-2008), said these PGMs would have embedded RF (Radio Frequency) and Infra Red (IR) heat seekers, which can precisely hit targets from a missile.

The ICAS-2008, beginning on February 22 at the RCI will see the presence of the former President and DRDO chief, Mr A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, a galaxy of distinguished Indian and global experts in avionics.

A 650-page volume on ‘Trends in avionic systems’ would be released at the meet. An industrial exhibition is also being organised.
