Centre urged to come out with hardware policy

Our Bureau

Kolkata, Feb. 21 The West Bengal Minister for Information Technology, Dr Debesh Das, on Thursday urged the Centre to come out with a national hardware policy with a view to facilitating growth of the hardware industry in the country.

Speaking at the inaugural session of the Infocom 07-08 Conference & Exhibition organised here by Businessworld and CeBIT, Dr Das said while the software sector had grown appreciably, the hardware segment was yet to take off as desired.

He felt a national hardware policy would provide States with the right impetus to put in place a system that would encourage investment in hardware manufacturing.

‘Extend benefits’

Dr Das also presented a strong case for extending up to 2020, the benefits currently available to IT companies registered with Software Technology Parks of India. This, he said, would also help small-sized IT companies which are not able to set up operations in SEZs.

In his welcome address, Mr D.D. Purkayastha, Organising Secretary of Infocom 07-08, said the theme of this year’s conference was `Service Excellence through ICT’.

The service industry, he said, was now a force to reckon with in India, contributing nearly 55 per cent of the GDP in 2006-07.
